Earlier this year we learned that to complete Phase 2 of our Eurasian Milfoil containment strategy, we needed a biological assessment to determine the worst areas of milfoil infestation in Newton Bay at a cost of $8,000.
We engaged COBALI, a government-mandated environmental organization, to do this assessment and set out to raise the money. We are happy to report that we have met our fund-raising target, and two biologists will be arriving this week to do the work throughout Newton Bay!
The Lac Saint Marie Municipal Council has indicated it will provide a $4,000 contribution, our GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $3,000 and the balance will be covered by the ABVPB’s existing funds.
A big thank you to the LSM Municipal council and everyone who has contributed to make this important work possible!
COBALI will provide a full report in December. We will then be able to apply for provincial grants and permits to lay down tarp and/or dig out the Eurasian Milfoil during low-water periods in the fall of 2023.
This is a big step forward!
